Season Rife with Sports Fraud

Every year around this time, my friends and I get together to mourn the loss of our husbands ... again. We usually lose one or two to NASCAR, a few to baseball, and, of course, the majority fall victim to college football. Yes, there is even one that we lose to last season’s NBA final round games on DVR. I know, winter can be a cold and lonely time for some.
But, this year, we have also seen the loss of a few more men who used to dominate the limelight that so easily lures even the most devoted husband. In place of highlights and recaps, the news has been speckled with stories of former athletes accused of committing fraud. A former baseball pitcher, baseball outfielder, football quarterback and basketball guard were all in the news this past week for alleged fraud. See our “highlights” below:
- Former Detroit Tigers star pitcher Denny McLain has made several wrong turns in his life. His latest was missing the exit for a Cracker Barrel. Read more.
- Former Ohio State and NFL quarterback Art Schlichter is facing additional time behind bars as he prepares to plead guilty to federal fraud charges stemming from a million-dollar ticket scheme. Read more.
- Tate George, a former player for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, was charged with running a $2 million Ponzi scheme that targeted ex-professional athletes. Read more.
- Former MLB star Lenny Dykstra was arraigned on two counts of misdemeanor indecent exposure involving women who responded to housekeeping ads he had placed on Craigslist. The charges came a month after Dykstra was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of bankruptcy fraud ... Read more.
