Member Spotlight: Crystal Skotedis, CFE, CPA

Crystal Skotedis, CFE, CPA, is more than just a fraud examiner with over a decade of experience in auditing — she is a pillar of her community.

Skotedis is president of the ACFE Central Pennsylvania Chapter and was appointed to be treasurer for Capital Region Water, a volunteer position serving her community. She also has been named in Pennsylvania Business Central’s Women Making a Difference List, as well as the Central Penn Business Journal as a Women of Influence Award winner.

Early on in my career I became interested in fraud mitigation and quickly decided to pursue the CFE credential. In my role as a young auditor at a CPA firm, I enjoyed the ways that having the certification set me apart. It provided me with additional tools to become adept at understanding organizations’ internal controls, evaluating what could go wrong and advising on better processes.

A few years later, an opportunity came up to establish the Central Pennsylvania ACFE Chapter and I jumped at the chance to become one of the original members and serve as treasurer. Becoming part of the ACFE and our local chapter instantly immersed me in a broad network of connections. It has become very rewarding to develop friendships with so many diverse and talented investigative thinkers.

This year, 2020, will mark my 10th year as president of the chapter. I am honored and humbled that the membership entrusts our board so deeply with facilitating the ACFE’s mission in our local community. I’ve been grateful to serve a talented and committed board every year, and we’ve been proud to deliver more than 75 local chapter events to our members in the last 10 years. ACFE membership is invaluable to me in the way that it affiliates me with high-caliber, high-quality resources and a vast network of professionals.

At Capital Region Water, we service the water, wastewater and stormwater needs of the capital city and the surrounding communities. Appointed by city governance to sit on the volunteer board of governing directors, I serve a talented team committed to serving the public. We ensure that we meet the needs of our community through quality service, capital improvements, pollutant reduction, water protection, infrastructure maintenance, regulatory compliance, and long-term futuristic thinking and planning.

I attribute my advancement to curiosity, ambition, hard work, avid learning, an entrepreneurial mindset and the generosity of great mentors. I will always be grateful for all the ways in which others have invested in and contributed to my growth.

For fun, I enjoy my family, adventures, music, antiquing, hosting family gatherings, reading and avidly exploring the outdoors with my husband, Jason. We love to be on the go.

ACFE membership is open to individuals of all job functions, industries and levels of experience who are interested in the prevention, detection and deterrence of fraud. Our mission is to support you by providing access to the knowledge, resources and training you need to do your job now and at every stage of your career.
