ACFE Offers Insight with New Blog

GUEST BLOGGER

Jim Ratley, CFE, ACFE President

A few years ago, a dear friend asked me if I had any books I could donate to a prisoner residing in a federal prison in East Texas. I had recently cleaned out my bookshelves and I thought to myself, “Why not?”

Surely this man could benefit from a few slightly worn books that I’d have otherwise thrown away. It wasn’t two weeks later that I received a letter from the prisoner thanking me for not only the books, but for the bookmarks he found resting between their pages. He said the bookmarks were unexpected surprises that took him to a different time and place. I soon remembered that the bookmarks to which he was referring were old boarding passes I’d used when long flights and layovers had led me to find refuge in bestsellers I picked up at airport bookstores.

The same slips of paper I’d casually discarded as placeholders became a way for him to connect to an outside world he’d been separated from for many years. He not only got a glimpse into my old reading habits, but he gained insight into the many places my life and job had taken me over the years. For a split second, he saw what the world looked like through my eyes.

It is with this same intention that we have launched ACFE Insights today. Currently, there are countless resources available to those seeking advice and information, especially on community networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and on personal and professional blog sites.
